Leadership: Marine Corps Style

The USMC style of leadership has secured the title Marines as one of the world's fiercest fighting forces. Since 1775 young Marine leaders have inspired their troops to stand in the face of enemy fire and accomplish the mission. Marine Corps leadership focuses on the mission and the Marines' welfare. This combination produces a savage loyalty. From the time a Marine prepares to becomes a Corporal, an NCO, his first real leadership position, the Marine Corps Traits and Principles of leadership are recited, learned and lived. And while these traits and principles are taught to the most junior leaders, they are expected of the Colonels and Generals as well. Marines are prepared to move up the corporate ladder quickly because in combat, a Private can become the Platoon Commander in one fatal explosion.

  • Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions.
  • Ensure assigned tasks are understood, supervised, and accomplished.
  • Train your marines as a team.
  • Employ your command in accordance with its capabilities.
